Last March 2019, Facebook launched the Facebook Ad Library, a database of Facebook ads that can be accessed on the web.
It contains information about Facebook Ads including ‘page creation date, previous page merges, and name changes’. It also shows the location of page managers and allows the community to report ad violations. This new features allows more community participation and access than ever before. In relation to that, marketers also noted that Ad Library can become useful for making digital advertising strategies.

Ad Library aims to bring transparency to how advertisements run on Facebook. By making the information public, the community can help regulate social media ads.

What comes as a surprise with this feature is that can be accessed by anyone, not just Facebook users. This allows digital ad information transparency regardless if you have Facebook or not. By allowing access to this data, Facebook indirectly brings a possible game changer for digital marketing and digital advertising strategies.

Ad Library Anatomy: Breaking Down All the Information You Have Access To

When you search for companies, digital ads, or keywords in Ad Library, you can see multiple information about these companies that were previously unavailable in Facebook.

Take for example this search for Ayala Land Inc, a real estate arm of Ayala Corporation and the largest property developer in the Philippines. The Page Transparency window on the right lists their page creation date, page name changes and page manager location.

Scrolling down would give you a list of ads the company run. Active and inactive ads, the launch dates, ad details, and a go-to link are seen within this part. You also have the option to filter location on top, which is useful global or multinational companies.

Clicking the three dots on the upper right corner of an ad allows you to report an ad for any false news or offensive content it contains. This is useful to help discontinue the spread of false information through the use of social media ads.

Below an ad, you can click “See Ad Details.”. The next page shows you other information regarding the company and its ad content.

“Why Am I Seeing This Ad?” on Sponsored Ads Added Details

Along with this feature, sponsored social media ads on Facebook has a feature called “Why am I seeing this ad?” as a disclaimer as to why ads are appearing in the timeline in the first place. Though this feature has been there for a while, there is new transparent digital ad information added to this feature.

Digital ad details would show you why the ad appeared on your profile. It allows you to know who their target audience is and what topics these ads concern themselves with and whether this ad concerns you in the first place.

These can be accessed through desktops, laptops, mobile phones, and tablets allowing access across all devices. The transparency of ad information extends power through Facebook users and non-users to help regulate online digital ad content and social media ads to assure it can be put to good use. Once Facebook Ad Library goes global, it would allow people all over the world to have information on ad spending and other stuff.

Although the feature stemmed from a series of political issues and turmoil, the feature expanded the possibilities of digital advertising strategies.

How Facebook Ad Library Can Expand Your Digital Advertising Strategy

There have been concerns from advertisers regarding this new ad policy that this could lead to plagiarism regarding their copies. As reported by Tech Crunch, Facebook is ‘expanding researchers and developers’ access to Ad Library API’. People with Facebook developer accounts have software access that could review data trends as long as they have verified profiles. The identity verification process allows Facebook to control the abuse of terms of service. In addition, Facebook promises to limit access to this API to avoid other data abuse similar to Cambridge Analytica. However, the details of the limits aren’t described in detail. If a user is determined to be abusive with the use of Ad Library, access could be revoked altogether.

The available digital ad data would allow online marketers to research and follow trends of other companies. Digital marketers could see what social media ads actually work reducing the need for a trial-and-error campaign.

By showing inactive ads, researchers can determine what campaigns have been dropped altogether due to costs and poor conversion. They could also gather common advertising trends that companies do to see the content that works and what saturates the market the most.

Frank Watching stated that by having these data available, you can either see how you can stick out against your competitors or see how you can improve yours for your target audience.

The Facebook Ad Library Effect

The Facebook Ad Library is an ambitious project and could redirect how digital ads and social media ads work in the future. By having data transparency on Facebook, social responsibility and data responsibility have been magnified for both big and small companies.

Although this tool helps Facebook weed irresponsible ads, it indirectly becomes a tool for online markets and digital advertising strategies. When data gathering and researching, consider the Ad Library as an essential tool to cater to your target audience, along with other digital marketing tools like Google Trends.

Finally, marketers and social media enthusiasts should use the Ad Library for its initial purpose. By extending the power to the people, Facebook Ad Library’s success will ultimately end up with the masses. Its success could determine digital marketing stagnancy or saturation. But nevertheless, it is undeniable that digital marketing is evolving through social media ads.

Last April 6-7, 2019, BlockDevs Asia returned for its second blockchain hackathon named “Decentralized innovation Startup Hackathon” (DISH 2019) which was co-hosted by EOI Digital. It was held in Makati Philippines and brought over 75 participants with 10 mentors and 12 judges. One of the mentors included our EOI Digital co- founder, Amadeo Brands. Altogether, they worked in creating blockchain solutions aimed towards creating a positive effect in people’s lives.

Their goal for this hackathon was to heighten the use of blockchain as a growing technology for both commercial and societal solutions. Their focus for this blockchain hackathon was centered on three platforms –IOST, Stellar and Ethereum. At the same time, they still made sure it was a blockchain agnostic hackathon.

Day 1

Day 1 began at 9AM with a brief introduction into blockchain by Caspar Oostendorp as well as the introduction of the mentors. Participants were then asked to start the work on their project at 11AM. The were breakout sessions arranged along with technical mentors assigned for each platform to teach the participants. For Stellar, Johan Sten and Tracy Li did the mentoring. Caspar Oostendorp and Chris Verceles handled the mentoring for Ethereum while Amadeo Brands and Terrence Wang managed the ones for IOST. Lisa Tan also conducted a remote workshop on token economics. Altogether, it provided a great base and gave newfound insights for the participants on how they can design their platform’s token.

It started out with majority of the participants being unsure on how to start due to their lack of coding experience in blockchain. This is where the mentors came in and guided them with ideas and tips on the possibilities of blockchain usage. They also went into the integration of a business model to complete the process. This brought about a plethora of ideas and solutions and inspired them to finally work based on blockchain. Their projects covered a variety of industries from financial solutions, data mining via quizzes, escrow, games, funding platforms, education systems to so much more.

With the entire afternoon packed on mentoring of both technical and business aspects, the participants deemed it a true worth it experience. There were even mentors who stayed until midnight just to make sure that everyone was on the right track.

Day 2

Day 2 was the much-awaited judgement day. It was everyone’s opportunity to show off their works and for judges to evaluate the qualifying and winning teams. It was a great surprise for most that they were able to create working blockchain applications despite it being a first time for majority of the participants.

By 1pm, the elimination round started and narrowed down the teams to 12 who would be the ones with the opportunity to give a final pitch. Their architecture and code was checked with a focus on their writing and reading the data to and from blockchain. At 4pm, the teams started to pitch their different projects. The judges considered many factors as they chose the winners. With that, they took into account the commercial, societal and technical viability of every project. The awarded 3 winners made use of the EOS and IOST blockchain platforms while other teams made use of Stellar, Ethereum and NEM.

Technology Philippines

This article originally appeared in PNA.

Currently, the Philippine government is being urged to transform digitally. They can create a “school for the future” which aims to create a society that is digital future oriented and to increase a part of the public sector into being more technologically savvy.

International Conference on Public Sector Productivity

In the International Conference on Public Sector Productivity, Albay Representative Joey Salceda discussed  the need for a “digital transformation officer” in government departments. This officer will aid the agencies into converting themselves towards being more digitized for efficiency.

“Revolutionizing every facet of business and government requires re-education of the bureaucracy and regulatory changes in view of the technological changes, the international dimension of the work, and cyber threats,” he said.

Emerging Technology

With so much emergence of various types of technology like blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), Rep. Salceda said it is important as these are becoming a big part of offices and businesses today.

Blockchain has started affecting the workplace and creating revolutionary digital change in record keeping. Its data is immutable and decentralized which means it cannot be changed or edited due to the high computing power it uses.

Meanwhile, artificial intelligence has gone and done activities that people find to be a wasting time as it is repetitive. The people have more time to do more productive activities.

Technology vs. Country Laws.

digital

A major problem with all these up-and-coming technologies is that they usually fall within a blurry line with our country’s laws. Let’s take for example cryptocurrency. The use of it is growing but it isn’t legal tender. There need to be policies done by the country like Circular Order 944, so that these can be regulated in the Philippines.

At the same time, Rep. Salceda also acknowledged that with the mass of change that comes with technology, it moves way faster than the government has time to fully adapt. With this, he proposed for policymakers to have a template for these technologies so they can grow in the country without worrying.

Policy Making

Digital Transformation

He then went on to cite these stages and what questions they will each be addressing:

  1. Pre-regulatory Stage – What do we currently have?
  2. Testing and Evaluation – When is it time to regulate?
  3. Regulatory Approach – How will the regulation be done?
  4. Revisit – What has changed and has anything improved?

A great example of this regulatory sandbox approach is Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) which actually makes use of this every time there is a new technology in the financial market. This included the rise of e-money services and right now with cryptocurrencies.

The BSP has the following “cycles” which is the following:

  1. Give the opportunity for the market to develop
  2. Continue with flexibility yet be careful
  3. Understand the current operating/business model
  4. Adapt with an appropriate regulatory approach
  5. Closely monitor the developments and related issues

Future of Digital Transformation in the Philippines

It is good to note that the country is taking steps towards moving forward. With these plans being set in motion, we can think of a more efficient and effective system in the country. This may lead to a lot of revolutions in the country like the lessening of bribery in agencies.

This can also be part of lessening the use of connections when running documents as it may be done online. We should take part in the movement so that the government may truly see the need for it and push for its immediate implementation.
